Nitinol has been a prominent material in both research and industry for decades. Various forms, shapes, designs, and properties have been realized, leading to the introduction of numerous products into the market. However, all of these products have been manufactured traditionally using conventional fabrication routes such as melting, metal transformation (sheets, tubes, wires), and structuring (laser, etching, waterjet). As of 2021, no Nitinol product or component produced through deposition techniques has achieved clinical status or entered serial production.

In this study, we aim to provide an overview of the recent history of Nitinol film fabrication, highlighting advancements and outlining the forthcoming steps required to further establish this fabrication technology.
