Summary: Heat affected zone (HAZ) cracking during welding of austenitic alloys, including nickel base superalloys, generally involves liquation of grain boundaries and/or grain boundary phases. This presentation discusses liquation of various phases in HAZ of IN 738 nickel base superalloy, which initiate intergranular microcracking.
