Residual Strength in Integral (Welded) Al Fuselage Structures - Understanding Failure Peculiarities Enables Amazing Strength Values

F. Palm, EADS Deutschland GmbH, Munich, AR, Germany

View in WORD format

Summary: The presentation will show that residual strength capabilities of welded components dedicated to future A/C fuselage structures are defined by the local crack tip plasticity behaviour in the vicinity of a welded stringer. Taking this into account optimised material selection and local geometry can generate residual strength improvements of 20 –30 % compared to current solutions.
