Summary: Since 1966, MTS has established itself as a high- end supplier of "turn key" integrated systems for advanced materials processing applications and physical testing and simulation equipment. MTS has committed itself to becoming the world's leading custom FSW equipment supplier. MTS's strategy is founded upon its computer-based force & motion control capability and its vast expertise and role in complex FSW technology applications. MTS is pursuing this objective through (1) hands-on in-house development work, (2) licensing and teaming efforts with industry, government and academia, and (3) developing turnkey FSW equipment solutions for an increasing number of complex technology applications. The specific area of technology to be covered in this paper is associated with Self Reacting Pin Tool (SRPT) Welding. Recent advances include welding aluminum alloys as thin as 1.8mm, as thick as 30mm and some complex contour welding. These advances will be discussed as well as the advantages SRPT welding has over the Fixed Pin Tool (FPT) approach.
