Summary: The alloying element vaporization and liquid metal expulsion during micro-joining of stainless steel with short pulse at high laser power were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The calculated fusion zone geometry, mass loss and composition change produced by laser micro-joining showed fair agreement with the corresponding experimental results.
