Effect of Orifice Gases on Bead Geometry, Metal Transfer and Microstructure in Plasma Enhanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding of Mild Steel

S. Pandey, S. Thiruchitrambalam, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi, India

View in WORD format

Summary: Use of orifice gas in plasma enhanced shielded metal arc welding (PESMAW) increases weld penetration upto four times over conventional shielded metal arc welding process while it results in flatter weld beads without any orifice gas. The results indicate the superiority of PESMAW in terms of better load carrying capacity; deeper penetration and microstructure.
