Summary: Cladding of low carbon steel with austenitic stainless steel 316L filler was investigated for dilution control. Response surface methodology was used to develop mathematical models for predicting dilution in conventional GMAW and UGMAW processes. The model presented is beneficial in the selection of optimum UGMAW stainless steel cladding conditions for achieving minimum dilution with adequate bond integrity, for the investigated filler and base metal combination.
