Using friction stir processing to fabricate Al/B4C nano composite surface layer

K. Jazayeri, School of Metallurgical and Mechanical Engineering,,University of Tehran,Iran, Tehran, Iran

A novel surface modifying technique, friction stir processing (FSP), has been developed for fabrication of surface composite. Friction stir processing (FSP) has been applied nano-sized B4C into an 7075 aluminium alloy matrix to form bulk composites. The effect of  processing parameters include: traveling speed; rotating speed; compressive pressure and shape of tool with differenet shoulder diameter was investigated.
The nano-particles were uniformly dispersed Al_/B4C surface composites were successfully fabricated The nano B4C particles were uniformly distributed in the aluminum matrix. The surface composites have excellent bonding with the aluminum alloy substrate. The solid-state processing and very fine microstructure that results are also desirable for high performance and hardness surface composites.
