Prevalence of the Depressive Symptoms in the Senior Population with Superior Age to 60 Years, in an Area of Family Health Program, in the Municipal District of Maringá - Paraná - Brazil

Objective:To verify the prevalence of the depressive symptoms in the senior population with superior age to 60 years, in an area restricted of Family Health Program, in the municipal district of Maringá - Paraná.

Design: Cross study of population seniors of Family Health Program.

Materials and Methods: A cross study was accomplished, using the Inventory for Depression of Bechk. The studied population belonged to 451 individuals, of which a sample of 123 people was used corresponding at 27,3% of the total.

Results: We obtained: 1) medium age 69+/- 8 years; 2) disfory: 15,1% of the men and 17,2% of the women (p=0.7590);depression: 34% of the men and 37,7% of the women (p=0,6942); 3) the depression prevalence as 4,8 times greater than the Brazilian population and 2,1 times greater than the American seniors.

Conclusion: Thus, the depressive symptoms has high prevalence in to seniors sample study, of an area of Family Health Program.
