CAT in Old Age. The Heart of Integration

Laura Sutton, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Hepple et al (2002) present a range of psychological therapies with older people, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, systemic, interpersonal and cognitive-analytic. They review the evidence, criteria for selection of patients and present illustrative cases. As part of a range of suitable therapies in later life, CAT is an integrative therapy. I shall draw out key concepts in the CAT model via illustration of a suitable case, and highlight individual and systemic applications. I hope to show how the CAT model relates to new developments within gerantology more broadly, concerning identity management in old age.
