Systemic Therapy in Later Life

Jane Pearce, Oxford Mental Health Care NHS Trust, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Systemic therapy is applicable to later life problems and the skills of the family therapist complement generic professional skills used in work with older people. The majority of system contacts occur outside of formal family therapy within the natural groups that form around older people. The range and efficacy of possible applications of systemic approaches in such systems will be discussed. A systemic therapy service needs to be fully integrated at grass roots level for older people to gain access. A psychological therapy network will be discussed as a possible service delivery model.
