Detection of dementia in clinical and community settings
Detection of dementia in the early stages continues to be challenging both in primary care and specialist settings. With the increasing availability of novel therapies early diagnosis is important, and efforts are ongoing to validate suitable assessment instruments. This symposium will address the utility of a number of clinical assessment tools for the detection of dementia in both community and clinic settings. Concordance rates for AGECAT diagnosis of dementia versus ICD 10 criteria will be presented by Dr. Eustace. This will be followed by Prof Lawlor’s presentation of new data on the sensitivity and specificity of the MMSE in an Irish community population using AGECAT diagnosis of dementia as the gold standard. Dr. Coen will present clinic and community data on the delayed word recall (DWR) test confirming very high specificity and sensitivity for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) versus elderly controls in both settings. Its utility in the differential diagnosis of different dementias will also be discussed. Dr. O’ Connell’s presentation will address the utility of the CANTAB paired associate learning task and the DWR test in elderly controls, patients with Alzheimer’s disease and patients with depression. To conclude the symposium, Dr. Aoibhinn Lynch will discuss the use of the CDR (Sum of Boxes) as an additional tool to aid the diagnosis of early dementia.
