Etching as a Tool For Visualization of Structure in MeN-X Type Nanocomposite Structures

M. Ürgen, K. Kazmanli, A. Öztürk, A. F. Çakir, Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey; A. Erdemir, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL

The aim of this study is to find a simple technique for the visualization of the planar and cross sectional morphology of MeN-X type nanocomposite structures. The principle of the technique adopted is based on different chemical reactivity of MeN and X components of the coatings. The MeN component of the coating is almost chemically inert against acids; however the metallic component (X) readily reacts with acids. In order to test the validity of the hypothesis Mo2N-Cu nanocomposite coatings produced by magnetron sputtering are used. The coatings were etched by dipping into conc. nitric acid for 2 seconds. The cross sectional and planar structures before and after acid etching are investigated with SEM and AFM respectively. The results of this study showed that it is possible to visualize the planar and cross sectional structure of the coatings with SEM and AFM after simple acid etching.
