Cost Effective Repairs for IGT Vanes

W. Greaves, Sulzer Hickham Inc., La Porte, TX

Gas turbine component damage can take many forms.  Craze cracking, large thermal mechanical fatigue fractures, erosion, and oxidation attack are common and are generally repaired by welding.  The weld repair process is tedious, requires skilled technicians to perform the operation, and can cause additional cracking and deformation.  For situations where large amounts of material must be restored, a much more simple and cost-effective solution is the application of braze. This paper will review the qualification of the process as well as some successful applications.
