Fasteners are a worldwide commodity and there is constant pressure to reduce the cost of that commodity. One can often change the manufacturing process and offer equivalent materials and become competitive. This failure is a case study in offering a change in material and manufacturing techniques (forged vs. machined from bar) that should have worked but the customer rejected the because the part did not pass the required burst test. The presentation will explain all the process steps involved (supplier and customer) and why the coupling nuts failed.
