The proper operation of bearings is extremely important to safety during engine operation, as well as having potentially large economic impact. During their design, all bearings have a calculated service life. However, there is always a risk that a bearing may fail prematurely for several reasons, with one of them being the assembly process, which if done incorrectly, can significantly shorten life. The presentation describes the analysis of a premature ball bearing finding on a turboshaft engine from a single ball spall and describes some of the features that would be identified to determine mode.
