The models that have been developed for the nitriding of tempered martensitic steels are being modified to simulate the FNC process. In the FNC process a carburizing gas is added to the nitriding atmosphere to concomitantly diffuse nitrogen and carbon into the steel. The FNC atmospheres are specified by the nitriding potential, KN, and carburizing potential, KC. The effects of the added carbon potential and carbon flux on compound layer growth and phase composition as well as the depth and hardness of the hardened case will be presented and discussed. In addition, alloy specific Kunze diagrams will be introduced to determine the equilibrium between the FNC atmosphere and the alloy compound layer. These simulations are compared with experimental results.
