What we call wrought iron today is not what the original name meant. Today, wrought iron fences are really 1008 steel or some other low carbon steel. Wrought irons of years past were a completely different material. Our aim is to show the differences between the mechanical properties and microstructure utilizing light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. The material to be evaluated is from Lake Michigan in Door County, Wisconsin. This effort is a class project from our material science classes at Richard J. Daley College’s Manufacturing Technology Engineering Center (MTEC).
