Population growth has involved an increase in the use of natural resources such as fossil fuels, promoting the development of strategies for the mitigation of their impacts, such as hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Despite the recent advances in more efficient electrolyzers, there remain technological and commercial barriers to solve. Nature has solved similar difficulties using simple materials and designs. Here, we use mitochondria as a source of inspiration to develop nanostructures on silicon substrates able to improve the electrolysis process to produce Hydrogen from salty water. The electrochemical response of the bioinspired electrolyzers manufactured shows promising responses in comparison to other electrolyzers.
