Webbing connections used in rock climbing are intended to protect climbers be securing them to the rock (directly or indirectly) - provided they are properly selected used and maintained. Standards for this material are available in terms of UIAA 103, UIAA 104, EN 565 and 566, There are a number of factors which affect the ultimate loading capacity of webbing - webbing diameter, wear characteristics, cut resistance, wet/dry condition, fall point length, climber mass, types and numbers of anchors and other connected protection pieces, miscellaneous friction forces, type of knots used, UV damage, etc. These will be explored with insight and comparison between lab testing and field experience.
