“Testing Methods of Thermal Cycle and Thermal Shock Resistance for Thermal Barrier Coatings” is a Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) newly established by the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry in 2008, after deliberations by Japanese Industrial Standards Committee, in accordance with the Industrial Standardization Law. This standard specified the testing methods for thermal cycle and thermal shock resistance of thermal barrier coatings provided to high-temperature components, such as combustor, rotor and stator blades of power-generation gas turbines used in thermal power plants. This paper introduces the principle and overview of the established standard.  Furthermore, results of test for thermal shock resistance conducted on two types of high-temperature ceramic coatings by plasma spraying are reported in order to verify the validity of this testing method.
