Hardmetal coatings have a high potential to be used in static friction applications, which require a maximum increase of friction. In this study Cr3C2-NiCr coatings were selected as they have shown the highest coefficient of static friction of all hardmetal coatings. In order to study the influence of the geometric surface parameters of the friction surfaces two types of as-sprayed coatings (HVOF and HVAF) were studied. The influence of adhesion was studied by surface finished coatings.
The form, orientation and the geometric characteristics of the friction surface were investigated. The static coefficients of friction ?0.1 up to 0.75 was measured, which was practically independent from contact pressure for the HVAF sprayed coating. The results show a decreasing standard deviation with increasing nominal contact pressure. It has been found that material from the counterparts has been transferred to the coating surfaces.
