Coatings obtained by thermal spraying used at Airbus Helicopters confer specific properties to metallic components in terms of hardness, fretting and wear resistance.

The following processes are used on Airbus Helicopters parts:

  • Plasma for spraying chromium oxide (Cr2O3)
  • “Flame” process family for spraying tungsten carbide (WC-Co)
    • D-GUN® (Detonation Gun, formerly Flame Plating)
    • Super D-GUN®
    • HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel)

Since these coatings are applied both on new parts and as a repair solution on worn parts, there are some challenges to develop a more robust supply chain. This presentation will address some of the key aspects to achieve this objective.
