State of the Art and Future Directions for Material Processing Simulation

D. Lambert, J. Walters, Scientific Forming Technologies Corporation, Columbus, OH

Computer simulation of component manufacture has, for some time now, been of great interest, for a very diverse range of applications. The metal forming prediction capabilities of FEM code DEFORM have provided many success stories in industry and academia for well over a decade. In addition to it’s traditional use, DEFORM has been applied to material supply processes, including rolling, extrusion and drawing operations. This presentation discusses the various types of rolling simulations, including slab, shape and pack rolling. An extrusion template is available within DEFORM and the ALE steady state approach has further extended the versatility of the DEFORM System.

Summary: This work details the capabilities of FEM code DEFORM as applied to material supply processes, including rolling, extrusion and drawing operations. Discussed are the various types of rolling simulations, an extrusion template and the ALE steady state approach to modeling.
