Materials information is expensive and the majority is currently used for one purpose (e.g. batch acceptance) and then discarded, archived and/or lost. One collaboration addressing these problems is the Materials Data Management Consortium (www.mdmc.net), led by Dr. Steven Arnold of NASA Glenn Research Center and supported by ASM International. Initiated in 2002, there has been significant progress towards their goal of an integrated software system to manage their own materials information. Consortium members set out software requirements to maintain the high standards of quality, efficiency and traceability of data. These have been implemented while leveraging the output of other groups, e.g. MatML, so that the flow of materials information within the member organizations is greatly enhanced. This paper describes a few key features, including data import/export/compatibility and access control.
