INVITED: Scaleable Cost-Effective Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

Z. Iqbal, A. Goyal, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ

Single wall carbon nanotubes are emerging as a key material for Nanotechnology. A scaleable, cost effective near atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition process involving carbon monoxide mixed with promoter gases as well as plasma enhancement and both fixed and fluidized beds of sol-gel synthesized bimetallic catalyst/soluble support system, is being carried out in our laboratory.Detailed characterization of the nanotubes produced by ex-situ methods as well as in-situ growth studies in an environmental transmission electron microscope, will be discussed. The self assembly of the as-synthesized nanotubes into nanotube membranes for applications in energetics and energy storage, will also be discussed.** Work supported by the US Department of Army
