S034-005 Combining the World of Farming and Care: Ambulatory Daycare for Patients with Dementia on a Care Farm

Jos Schols and Conny van der Schriek. Nursing home De Riethorst, Geertruidenberg, Netherlands

Objective: To use a new ambulatory day care accomodation, for dementia patients, still living at home.

Design: Descriptive report/study.

Materials and Methods: the development and organization of ambulatory daycare on a care farm is presented, as a specific outreaching function of a Dutch nursing home.

Results: Dementia patients with a background of farming or with a specific affinity with the farming life may profit from this particular care function. Data with regard to characteristics of the participating patients are presented. By receiving this type of daycare, during a few days per week, it seems that they show more functional stability and acceptable behaviour. For their family caregivers a new type of respite care is established. Both results can lead to a situation in which the patient can stay at home for a longer time.

Conclusion: A more structural and well defined longitudinal follow-up study is needed to confirm the results as reported above.
