The population of Hong Kong is aging rapidly and currently the proportion of people aged 65 or above stands at 11%. Specialized psychogeriatric services were first established in 1991 and now there are 7 major teams for the whole territory. Psychogeriatrics was recognized as a subspecialty by the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists in 1994.
The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists was established in 1990 and is responsible for setting standards of training in Psychiatry. To become a Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists as well as a specialist in Psychiatry, the candidate has to undergo 6 years of structured training in psychiatry as well as pass 3 examinations.
Part 1 and 2 of the examinations are similar to the examinations of the MRCPsych of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. For the part 3 examination, the candidate has to carry out a research project and submit a thesis and take an oral examination. Training in Psychogeriatrics or other subspecialties are integrated within these 6 years of training. Accreditation of the training was carried out jointly by the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and The Royal College of Psychiatrists every 3 years.
This paper will discuss in detail the curriculum and the current situation of training in geriatric psychiatry in Hong Kong.
