S004-004 Pharmacotherapy of Late-Life Bipolar Disorder

B Mulsant, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Although the numbers of older persons with bipolar disorder is increasing, there is almost no evidence from controlled trials to guide the pharmacologic treatment of bipolar disorder in late life. This presentation will summarize treatment recommendations using various available forms of information, including case series of elderly patients, extrapolation from data obtained in younger bipolar patients, studies of older patients with other psychiatric disorders, and clinical experience. Extrapolation of evidence from young patients is limited by age-associated factors that may limit tolerability and modify response.

Recommendations will be presented for elders regarding: acute treatment of manic, mixed, and depressed episodes, with and without psychotic features, and for long-term treatment.
