KP001-002 The Quest for Longevity: Psychodynamics and Scientific Reality

Robert N. Butler, International Longevity Center, New York, NY, USA

Objective: To discuss the deep-seated human aspiration for longevity,

1.) reflected in so-called anti-aging medicine, and

2.) in scientific reality.

There are no scientifically validated biomarkers of aging (that is no gauge of age). There are no established means to slow, reverse or stop aging. So-called anti-aging medicine is a scam and holds back financial support for studies for the basic biology of aging. Nontheless, there is considerable progress, understanding

1.) how and why aging occurs,

2.) longevity enabling genes, and

3.) age related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

The human quest for longevity remains powerful and motivates both false hope and solid science.
