Older adult drivers represent an increasing consumer population for Driver Rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The hospital based program relies on physician referrals from neurologists, gerontologists, general practitioners and physiatrists, consisting of diagnoses including CVA, dementia, organic brain disease, "memory loss" and "cognitive deficit". The referral sets in motion an evaluation process which includes a clinical assessment by an occupational therapist and behind the wheel assessment by a driver instructor. The resulting recommendations impact potentialities for our clients through the health care system (referring physician) and regulatory agencies (Department of Motor Vehicles). The results have immediate implications for the psychosocial well being of the elderly population in our community and the future allocation of resources for public/para transit systems.
