Objective: The association of apolipoprotein E gene polymorphisms with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia has been reported in several populations including one from a rural community in North India. However, the association of Apo E polymorphism with VaD is yet to be established in this population.
Design:In a case control study involving 54 cases of dementia (AD-29 and VaD-25 ) and 76 age matched healthy controls, blood was analyzed for the Apoe polymorphism.
Results: The frequency of e4 allele was significantly higher among cases of AD and VaD compared to controls (p<0.001). The e3e3 (p<0.05) and e3d3 (p<0.001) genotypes were found to be protective. The odds of developing AD or VaD were at 4.4 and 3.7 times higher respectively in presence of even a single even e4 allele.
Conclusions: Our results suggests that the increased risk of developing AD or VaD is similar among Asian Indians in presence of apo e4 compared to Caucasian population
