Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of urinary incontinence in elderly patients with senile dementia of alzheimer type (SDAT) and vascular dementia (VD) in Japan.

Design: 65 SDAT patients (83.2 ± 2.7 years of age) and 142 VD patients (76.4 ± 8.3 years of age) with urinary incontinence were investigated to evaluate the correlations among prevalence, grade, and risk factors of urinary incontinence.

Materials and Methods: Of these patients, 72% of SDAT and 96% of VD patients had urinary incontinence, and half of these patients showed high grade incontinence.

Results: Incontinence predominantly worsened along with SDAT & VD and behavior disturbance, but SDAT was not closely correlated with combined diseases, drug therapy, or urinary infection. These SDAT elderly patients exhibited accelerated reflexes of urinary muscles and was closely correlated with urinary incontinence.

Conclusion: In conclusion, SDAT and behavior disturbance were independent risk factors of urinary incontinence, and accelerated reflexes of urinary muscles were consindered to be the cause of the urinary incontinence.
