S054-002 Egyptian Psychgeriatrics

Abdel Moneim Ashour, Institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, AIN-Shams University, Giza, Egypt

Egyptians lived uninterrupted for thousands of years in the Nile Valley, developing a unique culture that became very stable over the last 3000 years. Several incursions on Egypt left only superficial indents on the culture. Islam prevailed since 1500 years, nicely accommodating to the stable Pharoenic core culture. Egyptian Moslems, Christians and Jews displayed marked harmony as regards to culture and every day life. Care of the elderly, mentally and/or physically infirm is well documented on wood, stone and paper.

Modern Egyptians practice Western/Global, Biomedical/Psychosocial Psychogeriatrics that transcends cultural premises. Egypt 1980-82 has provided for IPA, a cradle for a safe birth. Reciprocally, the IPA movement and organization have stimulated and supported modern Egyptian Psychogeriatrics.

The 21 year old IPA, having that Egyptian Passport, should not forget to come home; “Mama Cairo”.
