Objective: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) may afford a more rapid and extensive survey of structural abnormalities in Alzheimer°¯s disease(AD) than manually drawn region of interest (ROI) analysis.
Design: We used statistical parametric mapping to analyze magnetic resonance imaging scans from 18 AD patients and 16 normal comparison subjects
Materials and Methods: High spatial resolution structural images were normalized to the SPM99 template and then segmented, smoothed, and subjected to an ANCOVA.
Results: The AD patients showed gray matter reduction in the anterior temporal cortex and the amygdala/anterior hippocampal region bilaterally
Conclusion: These results confirm previous findings of temporal lobe atrophic changes in AD
