Objective:To present a practical comparison of appraisal tools for clinical trials. This will be illustrated by a recent transnational systematic review of evidence based methods to evaluate behavioural assessments in current use to ascertain those most useful in clinical practice and research trials.

Design: Qualitative comparison of research appraisal methodologies

Materials and Methods: Presentation and comparison of transnational appraisal tools

Results: Research quality is measured differently in different countries.

Conclusion: Research in dementia will benefit from cross-cultural and transnational analysis of data.
