PC-001 Between Policy and Practice: Physical and Mental Health of the Elderly

Gulzar Ahmad, Psychology, Psychology, Government College of Science, Lahore, Pakistan

Many studies have indicated that growing worldwide elderly population and complexity of their physical and mental health problems, especially in developing countries, need immediate attention of the global and local policy makers. With urbanization, degrading family values along with rapidly changing socio-cultural aspects of man’s life, the elderly need more attention rather than less. Their financial, physical and mental health issues need to be addressed globally as well as locally. At global level, it is suggested that a United Nations Elderly Fund be established whereas, at community level, healthy social participation, family integrity values be promoted to safeguard the physical and mental health of the elderly.
