This presentation is part of : Is 'Clinical Neurosciences' the Future Home of Psychogeriatrics?: An International Perspective

S029-004 Geriatric Psychiatry and the Future of Clinical Neurosciences

Kenneth I. Shulman, Psychiatry, Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada

This presentation will highlight the need for an integrated approach among different but related medical disciplines in understanding and treating “neuropsychiatric disorders” in old age. These disorders include: the behavioural and psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD), stroke-related psychiatric syndromes, traumatic brain injury and mood disorders secondary to a variety of brain lesions and degenerative disorders. It is desirable, if not probable, that a blurring of disciplines will accommodate better the diverse aspects and needs of this growing population. Future medical training and service delivery for this vulnerable group of patients will be facilitated by the collaboration of resources and expertise between the traditional medical disciplines of Geriatric Medicine, Neurology and Geriatric Psychiatry. It remains to be seen whether a new discipline of ‘Clinical Neurosciences’ emerges.
