S102-003 Suicide Rates of the Elderly in Eastern and Western Europe

Norman Sartorius, H.U.G., Geneve, Switzerland

The years of major political changes in Eastern and Central Europe provided an excellent opportunity to study the impact of political upheaval on suicide trends.

The changes in suicide rates in Eastern and Central Europe during these years were dramatic. Suicide rates of the adult population shot up more so in males than in females. Suicide rates of the elderly however did not follow this trend: they either declined or grew less rapidly than the rates of other groups of the population. The presentation will elaborate on the numerous possible reasons for this situation.
