Psychoanalysis in geriatric psychiatry

Florence Quartier, 00, Geneva, Switzerland

The psychoanalytic approach can mobilize the elderly concerning their memories, their personal history, and that which they desire to pass on, or forget. It also allows them to question themselves without fear or shame about experiences which they still wish to live. This approach contributes to the maintenenace of motivation and interest, which are often lacking in elderly, particularly those who suffer from memory disorders which can cause anxiogenic impressions of permanently losing one’s thoughts and memories to a neurobiological disorder.
