Psychoanalysis and Neuropsychology, A Present-Day Complementarity

The audience is invited to take part in an interactive discussion recorded on videotape: an individual session and the neuropsychological examination of a woman who has just been hospitalized, suffering from memory impairment. The neuropsychological examination identifies the cognitive deficiencies and the session - conducted in accordance with basic psychoanalytical techniques – gives a personal and intimate setting wherein to explore memory impairment. The neuropsychological examination allows us to define the first steps to take in helping the patient on a cognitive level, and the interview starts off with an agonizing question: to whom does the patient wish to entrust her memories before they are lost due to neuropsychological disorder? We seek here to go beyond the mere juxtaposition of different types of intervention in order to arrive at a coherent method which will be of use to the patient.
