Although passive components account for a significant fraction of field failures in electronic and electrical equipment, not many failure analysts are acquainted with the details of these devices. Accordingly, this seminar provides a practical introduction to some important types of passive components, their construction features, and their typical failure modes and mechanisms. Additionally, analytical techniques applicable to passive components are reviewed, and numerous case histories that show the effects of component abuse, misapplication, and manufacturing defects are discussed.
