Invited Talk: Ed Cole, Sandia, & Christian Boit, Retired, presents "50 years of ISTFA".
Title: “50 Years of ISTFA”
Authors: Christian Boit, Retired and Edward I. Cole Jr., Sandia National Laboratory
Abstract:
ISTFA has come a long way from its beginnings as an ultra-informal meeting on failure analysis (FA) engineering from aircraft to electronics to being a premier technical event for microelectronics device FA. This presentation, held by two “old hands” who have both been around ISTFA for the last 35+ years and are still active in FA, takes a look back on events that marked important mileposts for ISTFA. We also honor some of the people involved in taking the conference to its current level.
Biography:
Chris Boit
Christian Boit retired 2018 from Chair of Semiconductor Devices Department at Technische Universitaet Berlin (TUB), Germany. He received his diploma in Physics and the PhD in EE on electroluminescence topics at TUB as well. Chris started at Siemens Semiconductors 1986 in Munich, Germany and participated 1990 -1993 in IBM / Siemens DRAM project East Fishkill, NY. Back in Munich, he was active in management and scientific development of FA and became involved in ISTFA committees. From a Director FA position at Infineon Technologies, he changed gears and took the university chair in 2002. Chris is an active supporter of the FA community. He was co-founder of EDFAS, General Chair of ISTFA 2002 and ESREF 2014 .He is member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering Acatech (Germany) and Fellow of ASM International.
Biography:
Ed Cole
Edward I. Cole Jr. received a Ph.D. (1987) in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the Failure Analysis (FA)Department of Sandia National Laboratories in 1987. His research interests are in the development and improvement of non-destructive failure analysis tools, with emphasis on electron and optical beam techniques. In 2013 Ed was appointed to the positions of Sandia Lab Fellow and a Fellow of ASM International. He has served on the executive and management committees of the ISTFA and International Reliability Physics Symposium (IRPS) conferences, chairing the ISTFA’96 event. He was an Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS) founding member, serving on the Board of Directors from 1998-2004 and as EDFAS President from 2000-2002. He is a founding editor of the EDFAS Society’s magazine, serves on the IRPS Board of Directors, and the Acta Materialia Board of Governors.
