This talk will focus on the specific challenges inherent in moving from a faculty position in a specialized area of interest (geriatric psychiatry) to Chairman of a Department of Psychiatry. The speaker will share his observations about how to successfully compete for such a position, how to negotiate for resources, and which administrative skills are vital to acquire in order to be effective. He will also share some vignettes illustrating the most difficult issues he needed to confront as a manager upon assuming his first Chairmanship.
