Increasingly, psychiatrists are being drawn to professional opportunities in the corporate world; specifically, in the pharmaceutical industry. The speaker will review the factors that contributed to his decision to leave clinical practice and academic activity and to join the world of the multinational corporation. He will describe the challenges faced when entering a large organization that is focused on “meeting the bottom line” while also impacting healthcare in a positive way. Importantly, this talk will review the opportunities for psychiatrists to pursue careers in industry, the skills that need to be gathered, and the pitfalls as well as the rewards for making such a career choice. A recurrent theme in this talk will be the challenge of reconciling the identities of physician with manager.
